Dreaming of Dreams : the amazing world of optical illusions
(1991)
Since 1976, Frank Matthys has been fascinated by the creation of optical illusions, a passion that led him to publish a book in 1991.
Being himself active in the graphic industry, the elaboration of spacial shapes has no secrets for him any more.
Each work rests on two key models, around which a whole series of variations are built : firstly, the "one-fold frame structures", secondly, the "two-fold frame structures".
Intentionally, every "object" is designed isometrically, i.e. without perspective or, as it is called in technical language, in 2.5 dimensions.
All the "bars" run in a parallel way, as to reinforce the optical illusion.
This fictitious parallelism totally disappears when one introduces perspective.
The "art" lies in the fact of drawing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional plane.
One dimension is missing and it is precisely this dimension that Frank Matthys uses or, even better, misuses.
